How Bamboo Gasification Supports Green Development

Biomass gasification technology involves the thermochemical process of biomass pyrolysis under high temperature and limited oxygen conditions. This process induces the breakdown of complex biomass molecules into combustible gases, biochar, and biomass extraction liquids. Bamboo, with its rapid growth rate, proves exceptionally well-suited for biomass gasification. Unlike trees, bamboo is a herbaceous plant characterized by a short growth cycle. From the emergence of bamboo shoots to reaching an average height of 10-30 meters, it takes only 2-3 months. Throughout its growth, bamboo absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, exhibiting a substantial carbon sequestration potential that surpasses that of trees. Typically, trees require at least a decade of growth before harvesting, while bamboo matures and can be harvested within 1-3 years. A study estimates that one hectare of bamboo and its products can store 306 tons of carbon over 60 years, significantly surpassing the carbon storage capacity of an equivalent area of fir forest, which is only 178 tons under similar conditions.

Bamboo gasification technology can effectively address the waste generated in the production processes of bamboo products such as bamboo chopsticks, mats, and furniture. This approach facilitates the resource utilization, harmlessness, and reduction of bamboo waste. Utilizing bamboo as the feedstock for biomass gasification not only aids in reducing carbon concentration in the atmosphere, mitigating climate change, and achieving carbon neutrality but also presents opportunities for fostering green, low-carbon economic development at the individual, community, and national levels. This, in turn, enhances the resilience of local communities.

Bamboo Gasification Process and Products

The pyrolysis of bamboo is an irreversible exothermic reaction of high-molecular-weight organic compounds at high temperatures. The overall result involves the breaking of chains of high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons, releasing volatile substances from biomass and leaving behind carbonaceous structures. At elevated temperatures, the pyrolysis products of biomass form a highly complex mixture of gases, including at least several hundred hydrocarbons. Some of these can condense into tar at room temperature, while others, non-condensable gases, can be used directly as gas fuels with a calorific value exceeding 5438 KJ/m³.

The gasification process of bamboo is akin to other biomass gasification processes. Bamboo material introduced into the gasifier undergoes four stages: drying, pyrolysis, partial oxidation, and reduction. Ultimately, this results in the production of bio-bamboo charcoal and a mixed gas. In the separation and recovery system, the mixed gas undergoes cooling, and the condensed liquid portion is separated and recovered into an oil pool, achieving the recycling of biomass vinegar and tar (crude oil). The non-condensable gas undergoes purification and becomes syngas.

Syngas

The syngas, purified through the gas cleaning system, can be directly used for internal combustion engines, external combustion engines, or boiler combustion for power generation. It can also serve as raw material for synthesizing chemicals such as methanol, ethanol, and ammonia.

Bamboo Charcoal

Bio-bamboo charcoal, characterized by its porous and loose structure and significant surface area, exhibits strong adsorption capabilities. It can purify air, eliminate odors, absorb moisture, prevent bacteria, and enhance soil vitality, serving as an excellent soil conditioner. In the materials industry, bio-bamboo charcoal finds diverse applications, including the production of new composite materials such as ultrafine bamboo charcoal fabric, bamboo charcoal ceramic porous bodies, and powder-molded composite materials. It can also be utilized as a filler for biodegradable plastics and feed additives.

Bamboo Vinegar

Bamboo vinegar has excellent penetration and absorption properties for plant and animal tissues, and it effectively eliminates odors from livestock manure and kitchen waste. Bamboo vinegar also acts as a plant hormone, and by adding trace amounts to crops, it can promote root development, germination, and overall growth, enhancing the flavor of fruits. In summary, bamboo vinegar has extensive applications in agriculture, healthcare, and various other fields.
